Search Engines

Promoting your website
If you have a website you want to promote, you should check out SelfPromotion.com. It's a resource for do-it-yourselfers where you can learn to prepare your pages for the search engines, then use a sophisticated url submission robot to submit your webpages to all the important search engines and directories. You'll also find tutorials about website promotion, submitting to yahoo, and much more. Best of all, you can use the site for free -- if you like it, pay what YOU think it's worth! The guy who runs it has reinvented tipping!

Build a searchable database of your website
The iSearch PHP search engine allows you to build a searchable database for your web site. Visitors can search for key words and a list of any pages that match is returned to them.

Hint: You can add an entry to your Cron file to schedule iSearch to update it's database on a regular weekly basis. Here is the code that is required:

/usr/bin/php -q /home/user/public_html/isearch/admin/reindex.php

Googlebot, AWStats and Raw Logs

I. AWStats

1. Log onto Cpanel
2. Under 'Stats', click AwStats Stats
3. From the menu located on the left side, click Full List (under Robots/Spiders visitors)

This will tell you what spiders have looked at your site. This is very generic information (i.e. no specific pages, no specifics of the actual spider, etc.). Also note, 'Hits' does not refer to the number of pages. One page generally involves many 'hits' (each graphic for instance counts as a hit). The amount of bandwidth gives you an idea of how much was 'taken' but again, be careful. What if the spider visited the same page multiple times (which is quite frequent). Again, this information is very generic.

II. Raw Logs - the 'Real Deal'

1. Log onto CPanel
2. Under FTP Section, click on Manage Accounts

At the bottom of the page, you will find how to download your logs to your PC.

Once you have your logs downloaded, you can view them using the built in WordPad utility that comes with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP and search for 'googlebot/2.1'. This will show you all the actual pages that Google visited.

Comments:
Logs are reset at the end of each month.

Search Engine Submission
Design a High Search Engine Ranking Page

Check out WebMaster World for detail support and ideas for preparing your site for search engine submissions.

Registering Your Site
So where do you go to actually register your web site and submit it?

Zocoart would recommend using SelfPromotion.com
The best thing about this site (besides being free) is that the guy who runs it has a sense of humor. This helps if you want to do a bit of reading on the subject.

You can also try some of these sites:
